Žežulice (뻐꾹새)
Text: Václav Hanka (from the Dvůr Králové Manuscript **)
Music: Antonín Dvořák, Žežulice from Písně z rukopisu Královédvorského, Op.7
V širém poli dúbec stojí,
na dúbci žezhulice
zakukáše, zaplakáše,
že nenie vezdy jaro.
Kak by zrálo žitko v poli,
by vesdy jaro bylo?
Kak by zrálo jablko v sadě,
by vezdy léto bylo?
Kak by mrzly klasi v stoze,
by vezdy jeseň byla?
Kak by děvě tĕško bylo
by vezdy sama byla?
Oaktree on the plain makes shadow,
in its boughs a Cuckoo calls.
Hoarse and sad hath grown his singing,
that the Spring is all but flown.
How could golden corn fields ripen,
if Springtime lasted ever?
How could rosy apples redden,
if Summer lasted ever?
Soon all golden grain were frozen,
if it were Winter ever!
Ah, how drear the lot of maiden,
if the belov'd came never!
