Soirée en mer Text: Victor Hugo from "Les Voix interieures" (내면의 소리) Music: Camille Saint-Saëns, "Soirée en mer" (저녁 바다) 1. 25. Tu fais bien. Vois les cieux luire. Vois les astres s'y mirer. Un instinct là-haut t'attire. Tu regardes Dieu sourire; Moi, je vois l'homme pleurer! French Sop. Marie Devellereau (1971 - ) Soiree en mer - Marie Devellereau Hungarian Sop. Veronika Kincses (1948 - ) Soiree en mer - Veronika Kincses Saint-Saëns, Soiree en mer (악보, contralto or baritone) Evening on the sea 1. Near the fisherman who is rowing When we both, at the end of the day, Drift in the boat, With the frail man singing And the powerful tide moaning; 2. Sheltered by the sails As we sit down, In this darkness where you veil your face When, gazing at the stars, You seem to gather rays; 3. When both of us think we can read What nature has written— O tell me, you whom I admire, Why is it that my heart sighs? Why is it that your countenance smiles? 4. Tell me, why is it that at every billow, Like a cup of bitter gall, My soul is filled with thoughts? It is because I gaze at the oar While you gaze at the sky! 5. It is because I see the dark waves, And you the enchanted stars! It is because, lost in their numbers, Alas! I count up the shadows And you the light! 24. It is because I cast a haggard gaze Onto the muddied waters; While you, you beautiful veiled soul, Look up tranquilly Towards starry hope! 25. You do well. See how the heavens gleam. See the stars reflected there. An instinct makes you lift your gaze. You can see God smiling; While I see mankind weeping! note: Saint-Saëns의 이 노래는 Victor Hugo 125연의 시 "Soirée en mer" 중 연 1-5, 24-25을 인용하였다. In this song, an expansive, lyrical melody floats on rising-and-falling waves in the piano. In the alternation between major and minor chord colours at the end, we hear the encapsulation of Hugo’s contrast between the dark waves below and the enchanted stars above, between the beloved person who sees God smile and the poet who sees mankind weep. 10/4/15 musicgarden
