An Emma (To Emma)
Text: Friedrich von Schiller, Elegie an Emma
Music: Franz Schubert, Op. 58 No. 2
Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart
Weit in nebelgrauer Ferne
Liegt mir das vergangne Glück,
Nur an einem schönen Sterne
Weilt mit Liebe noch der Blick.
Aber, wie des Sternes Pracht,
Ist es nur ein Schein der Nacht.
Deckte dir der lange Schlummer,
Dir der Tod die Augen zu,
Dich besässe doch mein Kummer,
Meinem Herzen lebtest du.
Aber ach! du lebst im Licht,
Meiner Liebe lebst du nicht.
Kann der Liebe süss Verlangen,
Emma, kann's vergänglich sein?
Was dahin ist und vergangen,
Emma, kann's die Liebe sein?
Ihrer Flamme Himmelsglut,
Stirbt sie wie ein irdisch Gut?
Far away, where darkness reigneth,
All my dreams of bliss are flown;
Yet with love my gaze remaineth
Fixed on one fair star alone.
But, alas! that star so bright
Sheds no lustre save by night.
If in slumbers ending never,
Gloomy death had sealed thine eyes,
Thou hadst lived in memory ever--
Thou hadst lived still in my sighs;
But, alas! in light thou livest--
To my love no answer givest!
Can the sweet hopes love once cherished
Emma, can they transient prove?
What has passed away and perished--
Emma, say, can that be love?
That bright flame of heavenly birth--
Can it die like things of earth?

Friedrich Schiller (Emma Körner가 그린 초상화) and Emma Körner
