Vanessa - 중년의 귀부인 Vanessa와 그녀의 조카딸 Erika의 비슷한 비극적 love life를 담은 Samuel Barber의 4막 오페라이다. "A true first American opera"라 불리는 이 작품은 1958년 Eleanor Steber의 주역으로 Met에서 성공적으로 초연되었다. 대본은 언젠가 소개한 적이 있는 오페라 "The Consul"의 작곡자 Gian Carlo Menotti. 수년을 그녀의 연인 Anatol을 기다리며 고독하게 살아온 Vanessa. Anatol의 아들을 만나 (그의 이름 역시 Anatol) 사랑하게 되지만 그녀의 조카딸 Erika도 그와 사랑에 빠지고... 기회주의의 Anatol, Erika를 임신 시키나 결국 Vanessa와의 결혼을 택하고... Erika의 Vanessa를 닮은 비극의 시작이다. Must the winter come so soon?
