뮤지컬이나 오페레타로 이해되어 온 이 작품은 근래에 와서는 작곡자 자신의
말을 존중하여 오페라로 다루어지게 되었다. 그러나 그런 구별을 초월하여
이 음악이 재즈, 포퓰러, 세미 클래식 등 폭 넓게 지지를 받는 것은 누구에
게나 순응성이 있는, 고전적인 걸작으로 인정받기 때문일 것이다.
듀보스 헤이워드(DuBose Heyward)의 소설 "포기(Porgy)"의 원작으로,
헤이워드와 작곡자의 형인 거슈인(Ira Gershwin)이 전 3막으로 대본을 썼다.
